Because there are plenty of people who still see the glass half full.

“For us, most of the media coverage of Detroit has only focused on what’s missing. Of course, understanding the city’s problems is important. But it’s not the whole story. I think it’s about time we focus on what Detroit does have — inspiring people willing to work for change.”

-Patrick Sier

Viewpoint: Meet the real Detroit

Because it’s the definition of the American Dream, and a new land of opportunity.

“Detroit has a brand. A brand that is authentic and completely unique to Detroit. It is a strong brand that we are not creating, but exposing after years of neglect. With a foundation of more than a century of inventing, improving, solving and manufacturing, it is a brand rooted in imagination and innovation. It is unique to our history. Our people. And while it might have been laying dormant for a bit – today’s brand is the same one that made us the “Paris of the Midwest” more than 100 years ago.”

“In what other region could idealistic creative entrepreneurs, in groups of two and three, make such a strong impact on a city? The answer is only in Detroit.”

“We have amazing business leaders, organizations, foundations, non-profits and corporations working to promote our city. Together, we are Detroit. The place where things get done.”

-Tim Smith

It’s time to get it done

Because there are people dedicated to bettering their community.

“I’m cool with these kids learning how to box. Boxing is a good thing. But education, positive role models, and having a safe place to go where you’re not scared that someone’s gonna sell you drugs is way more important. You know why kids join gangs? Because they’ve got reading problems. They’d rather look cool than stupid.”

“We must measure Detroit by how we respond cooperatively from within to the challenges we face from without; measure Detroit by what we create and export through our artistic endeavors; evaluate Detroit by the vision, the sense of hope that permeates all local initiatives; measure Detroit by the force of your own emotion and imagination fired in the presence of her ruins.”

“In the downtown [Detroit] area, you’re at 10 to 20 stories. That’s a human scale. We went up in some of the buildings and looked out and it was sort of like, “Wow. I exist.” I’ve had clients in Manhattan who live on the 80th floor of some building and you don’t exist. It’s totally theoretical. You can’t even hear anything out there. The windows are all shut.”

To paraphrase the 54th minute of dialogue and borrow it as my own:

“Hard work was engrained in me from my parents. But, later on, I realized that work ethic, is really one of the only things that I have going for me. Because, honestly speaking, there’s more creative people out there than me, there’s geniuses, real geniuses out there; savants. And then there’s better graphic people, there’s better clothing people, there’s richer people, there’s people that are more well connected than me, there are people that are better looking than me, and so I was like man, I’m never going to win on my looks, I’m never going to win on my true artistic talent, I’m never going to win on my financing, I’m never going to win on my cut and sew alone, you know? I’m just going to fucking outwork everyone. I’m just going to stay up longer than everyone, work every weekend, not go to THAT party, not go to THAT bar, you know? And just work every Saturday, Sunday till four, five, a.m. That’s the only way I could do it.”
